The Eyepieces
Making a 4.25 Inch Dobsonian
Reflector Telescope
The eyepieces for the telescope were
purchased inexpensively from Surplus Shed
a great resource for optics. They are
0.965 inch eyepieces which I now consider little more than toys. Only the longest focal length eyepiece is
of much use.
For those inclined to buy, I found a good article on
what to consider.
I did however as part of this project
try to fabricate my own 1.25 inch eyepiece.
I purchased some lenses from Surplus Shed and then machined a barrel on
a milling machine. This was a fun
project, but I don't recommend it unless it really appeals to you. Along with the milling machine, it required
the use of a rotating table, a special beveled bit for the curved outer
surface. To create the spacer/holders
for the lenses I cut rings out of flat plastic using a laser cutter. These machines are all standard at Tech Shop though you need some training to
use them.
